Paris Day Trip- Chateau de Fontainebleu
If you’re visiting Paris and want a break from the city without going far, a day trip to Fontainebleau is one of the best options. Less crowded than Versailles but just as beautiful, this charming town offers a mix of royal history, walkable streets, and plenty of space to slow down and explore—making it ideal for families.
Getting from Paris to Fontainebleau
One of the best parts about visiting Fontainebleau is how easy it is.
- Train: Take a direct train from Gare de Lyon to Fontainebleau–Avon (about 40–45 minutes).
- Car: Rent a car in Paris and it’s about an hour drive to Fontainebleau. (This is what we did!)
Visit the Château de Fontainebleau
The heart of the visit is the Château de Fontainebleau, a former royal residence that housed French monarchs for over 700 years. Unlike Versailles, Fontainebleau is much less touristy and easier to get around with kids. Even if you decide not to do a tour, it’s worth a visit to walk the grounds and let the kids run and play in the gardens.
The chateau is open every day except Tuesday, January 1st, May 1st and December 25th.
From October to March: 9.30 am to 5 pm (last access at 4.15 pm).
From April to September: 9.30 am to 6 pm (last access at 5.15 pm).
The park and gardens are open, under the usual conditions, free of charge.
The restaurant is open every day for lunch.
After visiting the château, be sure to check out the town and have lunch in one of the little cafes. This trip is best enjoyed in the spring and summer months in my opinion.
