The Perfect Luxury Hotel Base for Exploring Austria, Switzerland & Germany
If you’re planning a Europe road trip through Austria, Switzerland, and Germany, finding the right home base can completely change your experience. After sharing our stay on Instagram, so many of you asked where this hotel was located and whether it’s truly worth adding to your Austria itinerary. The answer? Absolutely.
Four Points by Sheraton Panoramahaus Dornbirn
Located in western Austria near the borders of Switzerland and Germany, this modern mountain-view hotel ended up being one of the highlights of our entire trip! It was the perfect blend of rest and relaxation during a busy 2 week roadtrip through Europe with 3 kids.
Here’s why this hotel deserves a spot on your Austria road trip itinerary.

Why Dornbirn Is the Perfect Base for an Alps Road Trip
Before our road trip through Germany and Austria last summer, I had never heard of Dornbirn. But after staying here once, I realized it may be one of the best hidden gem locations in Europe for families wanting to explore multiple countries without constantly unpacking and moving hotels. We loved it so much we stayed here 2 years in a row.
From Dornbirn, you can easily visit:
- Switzerland
- Germany
- Liechtenstein
- the Austrian Alps
- Lake Constance
All while staying somewhere quieter and less touristy than larger cities.
Drive times are surprisingly manageable:
- Zurich: about 1.5 hours
- Innsbruck: about 2.5 hours
- Neuschwanstein Castle: about 2.5 hours
- Appenzell, Switzerland: about 1 hour
- Bregenz & Lake Constance: about 20 minutes
- Liechtenstein: about 1 hour
For families especially, having one relaxing home base makes such a difference during a Europe trip.
Why We Loved Four Points by Sheraton Panoramahaus Dornbirn
From the moment we arrived, the mountain views blew us away. The hotel has a sleek modern design with huge panoramic windows overlooking the Austrian Alps. It felt upscale and luxurious while still being incredibly comfortable and family friendly.

Some of our favorite things about the hotel:
- Spacious modern rooms. We even had a balcony
- Incredible mountain views
- Quiet atmosphere
- Indoor spa & wellness area
- Relaxing pool
- Easy parking
- Incredible breakfast with panoramic mountain views
- Convenient location near major routes
- Family-friendly environment
- On site restaurant
It truly felt like the perfect place to rest and recharge during our 2 week road trip through Europe. Our kids loved it as much as we did!
The Spa & Wellness Area Was Incredible
One of the biggest highlights of the hotel is the wellness area. The indoor pool overlooks the mountains and feels much more luxurious than you’d expect for the price point.
The spa includes:
- indoor panoramic pool
- sauna
- steam rooms
- fitness center
- relaxation areas
After road-tripping through multiple countries, It was nice to have a break from the city hustle and just relax. If you’re traveling as a couple, this hotel would make an amazing wellness getaway. If you’re traveling with kids, be aware that kids under 16 are not allowed in the spa area. My husband and I took turns looking after the kids while the other one went and enjoyed the saunas.
Family-Friendly Features We Loved
Traveling through Europe with kids can sometimes feel overwhelming or stressful, especially when hotel rooms are small. This hotel made everything feel easy and our kids loved it just as much as we did! There are a few rooms in the hotel with a balcony, so if you want a little outdoor space be sure to book your stay in advance to secure the room choice.
What worked especially well for families:
- larger rooms
- elevators
- parking garage
- quiet atmosphere
- excellent breakfast
- pool for downtime
- easy access from the highway
- convenient location for day trips
And because Dornbirn itself is much calmer than larger tourist cities, it felt far less stressful with kids in tow.
Explore Downtown Dornbirn
Dornbirn may not be as famous as other cities in Austria like Salzburg or Innsbruck, but that’s honestly part of its charm. The town itself feels relaxed, local, and much less touristy than many larger Austrian destinations. While it’s smaller, we really enjoyed walking around the town center, browsing shops, stopping for icecream, and simply slowing down a bit between bigger sightseeing days. One day is plenty to explore downtown.

Tips Before Booking:
Here are a few things I’d recommend before your stay:
- Rent a car for maximum flexibility
- Stay at least 2–3 nights
- Request a high-floor mountain view room
- Book early during summer travel season
- Use Dornbirn as a multi-country road trip base
