10 Things I Wish People Knew Before Visiting Paris

- “Bonjour”- always use a simple “bonjour” when entering a store or speaking with someone. If not you could be considered rude.
- Take the metro! It’s a fast and easy way to get around the city. Be sure to get a Navigo pass if you plan on using it a lot during your stay. Use google maps to help you navigate. It can be difficult with strollers as there are lots of stairs.
- Slow down at cafes- the French are never in a rush and neither should you. Sit back and relax and enjoy people watching.
- Tipping is not expected- if service is really good a small tip is appreciated but not expected. Tips are build into the price you see on the menu as well as tax.
- Don’t eat at tourist traps- always go a few blocks away from very tourisy areas to find restaurants. You will always find better food, better prices and better service.
- Dress like a Parisian- think basics, comfy sneakers, comfy put together outifts but not activewear or leggings. Layers and neutrals are always a good idea.
- There’s more to Paris than the Eiffel Tower- some of my favorite neighborhoods are in the Marais, Montmartre, and my neighborhood, the 16th.
- Plan on late dinners- most restaurants open for dinner at 7pm or later. If you have young kids plan on going early to beat the crowds. A lot of restaurants do not have high chairs so plan accordingly.
- Hit up a local pharmacy- it’s the best place to find good quality French skincare at prices less than half what we pay in the US. Any pharmacy is good, some have better prices than others.
- Picnic like a local- grab a baguette or croissants, cheese and even wine from a local bakery or shop and relax by the Eiffel Tower or Seine.
